Middletown is the largest school district in Monmouth County. Approximately 9500 students attend the seventeen schools, of whom approximately 2000 are classified as special needs. The annual budget is approximately $180 million, of which the local taxpayers raise approximately $151 million. Approximately $20 million is for Special Education . Per pupil cost is in excess of $20,000 annually.
